3 OFFICERS RECOGNIZED AFTER RESCUE

SAVANNAH, GA. (November 21, 2013): Three Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department officers are being credited with saving the life of a Cloverdale neighborhood resident they found trying to fight a fire in his house Monday.

The West Chatham Precinct officers entered the house on the 1600 block of Rosemary Street after finding the roof ablaze about 4:35 a.m. to locate the elderly resident in the kitchen fighting the fire with a garden hose.

While they were trying to get him away from the blaze, a large portion of the ceiling fell in, spreading fire between the officers and the resident. The officers ran through the fire, grabbed the man and pulled him out of the building.

“This was a lifesaving effort by these three officers who put their lives in jeopardy to save another and an example of the actions members of this department do daily to protect the public,” said Interim Police Chief Julie Tolbert. “We are proud of their actions and the work done by them and their fellow department members.”

Capt. Philip Reilley, precinct commander, has nominated the three officers for one of the department’s highest honors – the “Lifesaving Award.” Nominated were West Chatham officers Andre’ Cureton, Joel Mondesir and Jacob Kapeller.

The house was destroyed, but the resident escaped injury other than minor smoke inhalation.
