Twenty-one recruits of the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department and a large contingent of state law enforcement officers will take to the street May 2 to remember a Georgia State Patrol trooper killed in the line of duty in the Savannah area.

Trooper Ronald E. O’Neal was 39 and a 13-year veteran of the Georgia State Patrol when he died in a high-speed pursuit on Interstate 95 in Liberty County Jan. 10, 1984. He left a wife and two children.

He will be remembered in the quarterly Run to Remember conducted by graduating Classes 265-266 as they complete their 19 weeks of training to become SCMPD officers. They will be pinned as SCMPD officers in a ceremony the following day. The run was established in 2010 to honor one of the 51 law enforcement officers from Chatham County who have died in the line of duty.

The run will begin at 10 a.m. in front of Police Headquarters at 201 Habersham Street and conclude a mile and a half away at the Savannah History Museum Battlefield Park at West Liberty Street and MLK Jr. Boulevard.

Members of the public, current officers and members of surrounding departments are invited to participate in the run. Recruits and staff members of the Georgia State Patrol Training Center are expected to join in the run.

A ceremony will conclude the event at Battlefield Park.
