SAVANNAH, GA ( May 17, 2011) Savannah-Chatham metro Police are encouraging bike owners to take their bikes inside. A Secure bike is OUT OF SITE!!! The Downtown Pct. is experiencing a rash of bike thefts in the Historic District. On average 5 bikes a week are stolen. The below numbers represent all five precincts. Theft numbers: 2009- 592 incidents 2010- 489 incidents 2011- 194 incidents Times have changed. In the past you could simply secure your bike by chaining it to a secured object. Now reports show 90% of stolen bikes were secure, thieves are cutting the locks. Our mission is to inform the community of the many yard and street larcenies. We are attempting to encourage cyclist/residents not to leave their chained bikes outside. Remember a secure bike is OUT OF SITE!!! Take your bike INSIDE!!!
